Georgette, Explained

Georgette is the fabric you've worn without knowing its name — light, faintly crinkled, semi-sheer, and it never sits flat against the body. Here's what it actually is, and when it beats linen.

What makes georgette georgette

The yarn is twisted hard before it's woven, in alternating directions. That twist is the whole story: it gives georgette its slightly grainy hand, its soft crinkle, and its refusal to cling. It's why the fabric floats a centimetre off the skin instead of sticking to it.

The Ivory Georgette Pleated Top is the one piece in the line that shows it properly — soft ivory, fine vertical pleats running the full length, a keyhole neckline finished with a thin tie, and a gentle swing through the hem.

When georgette beats linen

Linen is the better fabric for a hot, dry afternoon — it's cooler and more absorbent. Georgette wins in the evening, and in humidity, because it doesn't hold water against you and it doesn't crease. If linen looks lived-in after four hours, georgette looks exactly the same at midnight as it did at seven.

Semi-sheer, handled properly

Semi-sheer is a feature, not an oversight. Layer it over an ivory slip with tonal trousers, or let it float over fitted white pants for evening. Matching the layer underneath to the top is what keeps it looking intentional — a contrasting slip turns a sheer top into a visible undergarment.

If you want the same silhouette without the sheerness, the Butter Linen Pleated Top is the opaque version — box pleats, A-line swing, butter-beige linen.

Care: less than you think

Hand wash cold, or a delicate machine cycle in a mesh bag. Never wring — squeeze the water out between your palms and hang it wet, and the weight of the water pulls the pleats straight. Almost no ironing required; if you must, use the lowest setting with a cloth in between.

Frequently asked questions

Is georgette hot to wear?
No. It's light and holds itself off the skin, which is why it works for humid evenings where linen has already creased and cotton has gone damp.

Do I need to wear something underneath?
Yes — it's semi-sheer by design. A tonal slip or cami in the same ivory keeps the look clean.
