Necklines: A Field Guide

The neckline decides how a top reads before the fabric or the colour gets a say. It frames your face, sets the formality, and settles the jewellery question. Here's every neckline on our rail and what each one actually does.

The V-neck: the workhorse

A V lengthens the neck and gives the eye a line to follow — the reason it flatters nearly everyone. Most of our wraps carry it: the Sand Linen Wrap Top keeps it moderate and easy, while the Slate Linen Wrap Top cuts it deeper for a dressier register. A pendant sits well in a V; a collar necklace fights it.

The round neck: the quiet one

A round neckline is the least opinionated of the lot, which is its strength — it hands the attention to whatever else the top is doing. On the Steel Linen Tie-Front Top, that's the three self-ties down the front and the balloon sleeves. The neckline stays out of their way.

The mandarin collar: the polished one

A short stand collar that circles the neck without folding over. It reads tailored and a little formal without a single extra element — no lapel, no buttons on display. The Oat Linen Tie-Neck Top pairs it with a slim neck-tie you can knot or leave loose; the Champagne Silk Jacket pairs it with frog knots. Skip the necklace entirely here — earrings do the work.

The camp collar: the relaxed one

An open, flat-lying collar with a notch — holiday-shirt DNA, worn year-round. It sits away from the neck, which makes it the coolest option in real heat. The Ink Linen Camp Shirt is the cropped version; the Moss Chanderi Popover softens it into something lighter. Its cousin, the Cuban collar on the Indigo Dot Wrap Shirt, does the same job on a wrap.

Picking by occasion, not by rule

Work meeting: mandarin or a moderate V. Long hot day out: camp collar, no contest. Dinner: the deeper V or the mandarin with earrings. There's no neckline you can't wear — only necklines doing different jobs.

Frequently asked questions

Which neckline is most flattering?
The V-neck, for most people — it lengthens the neck and draws the eye vertically. But a mandarin collar flatters anyone who wants a cleaner, more tailored frame.

What jewellery goes with a mandarin collar?
Earrings, not necklaces. The collar already occupies the neckline; a chain on top of it looks crowded.
