The Swing Cut, Explained

A swing top fits at the shoulders and nowhere else. From there it widens steadily to the hem, like the letter A, and hangs clear of the body the whole way down. It's the cut that gives you the most air for the least effort — and it's the most misunderstood shape on the rail.

What is a swing or A-line cut?

Three things define it. It's narrowest at the top — neckline, shoulders, upper chest. It flares gradually, not suddenly; there's no waist seam and no gathered tier. And the hem is the widest point, so the fabric moves when you do. That movement is where the name comes from.

It's different from a boxy cut, which drops straight down from the shoulder like a rectangle. Boxy is architectural. Swing is fluid.

Where the flare comes from

The flare has to be built in somehow, and how it's built changes the look. On the Butter Linen Pleated Top, it comes from box pleats that start at the round neckline and open as they fall. The pleats hold the fabric flat at the top and release it lower down. So it's neat where you want neat and loose where you want loose. It's sleeveless, and cut longer, so it skims rather than clings.

On the Ivory Georgette Pleated Top, fine vertical pleats run the full length of a semi-sheer georgette, with a keyhole neckline finished with a thin tie. Georgette is far lighter than linen, so the swing here is more of a float. It's best layered over a slip.

The swing dress

Stretch the same shape to the knee and you have the Cocoa Linen Swing Dress: scoop neck, wide straps, sleeveless, a roomy patch pocket at the side. The A-line is cut into the pattern itself — no pleats, no gathers. Just more fabric at the hem than at the chest. It's the simplest and coolest dress shape there is.

Why it's the right cut for heat

Fabric that touches skin traps heat. Fabric that hangs away from it creates a chimney — warm air rises out through the neck and armholes, cooler air comes in at the hem. A swing cut in linen is about as close to air-conditioning as clothing gets.

How to wear a swing top without looking shapeless

Keep the bottom half narrower. Slim or straight trousers balance the width above. The butter top over slim white pants lets the pleats do the work.

Or go fully tonal. Wide on wide works when the colour is continuous — the same top with beige wide-leg trousers reads as one long column rather than two volumes.

Show something narrow. Sleeveless swing tops work because bare arms and collarbones establish your frame. The eye reads the shape as chosen, not as hiding.

Never tuck, never belt. Both defeat the cut. If you want a waist, buy a wrap.

Frequently asked questions

Does a swing top make you look bigger?
Not when the shoulders fit. A swing top that's too big at the shoulder looks like a tent. One that fits at the shoulder looks deliberate. Buy your true size.

Is A-line the same as swing?
Near enough. A-line describes the shape; swing describes how it moves. Most garments described as one are also the other.
