What to Wear in Goa

Goa season opens in a few weeks, and the standard packing list hasn't changed in fifteen years: slogan tees, denim shorts, one "nice dress" that turns out to be too hot. There's a better list. It's shorter, it fits in a cabin bag, and nothing on it says "Beach Please".

What the weather actually asks for

Goa is humid more than it's hot. Fabric that holds moisture — polyester, thick cotton jersey, denim — stays damp all day and never quite dries overnight. Linen releases moisture fast and dries on a chair back in an hour or two. That's the practical case. The other case is that it looks right: matte, relaxed, a little creased, like everything else there.

The set that does most of the trip

The Chartreuse Linen Piped Set was more or less made for this. A camp collar shirt with a relaxed button-front, patch pocket and full sleeves with elasticated cuffs, and matching mid-thigh shorts with side pockets — brown contrast piping throughout. Together, it's the beach-shack lunch outfit. Apart, the shirt goes open over a tank or a swimsuit, and the full sleeves are useful sun cover on a scooter. The shorts go with any plain top you've packed.

One dress, for everything else

The Cocoa Linen Swing Dress — sleeveless, scoop neck, wide straps, knee length, A-line, with a patch pocket at the side. Over a swimsuit in the day. With sandals and earrings at night. Deep cocoa doesn't show sand, sunscreen or a spilled drink. It's the piece you'll wear three times and not admit to.

Two tops

The Colour-Block Linen Strap Top is a square-neck top in four colour blocks — indigo, berry, brown and cream — with wide contrast straps and a boxy fit. It's the holiday top: enough colour for the photos, easy enough for the heat. The Washed Linen Wrap Top, in natural undyed linen with cap sleeves, is the quiet one for dinner. Both go with the chartreuse shorts, which is the point.

For him

The Ash Linen Popover Shirt — ash grey, open V neckline with a soft collar, no buttons, full sleeves, boxy and untucked. Sleeves pushed up over shorts by the water is precisely what it's for. Add one camp shirt from the men's line for the evenings, and that's the packing done.

What to leave at home

Jeans — you won't wear them. Anything that needs ironing to look acceptable. Heels; the sand and the cobbles will both defeat them. Anything white and precious. And the slogan tee. You know the one.

Washing on the trip

Rinse linen in the hotel sink with a little shampoo, squeeze without wringing, hang in the bathroom or on the balcony out of direct sun. It's dry by morning. This is why you can pack five pieces for six days.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to a Goa beach club or a nice dinner?
The swing dress with flat sandals and earrings, or the full chartreuse set with the shirt buttoned. Goa's dress code tops out at "clean and intentional".

Is linen okay for the beach itself?
As a cover-up, ideal. Salt water and sand rinse out easily. Just don't leave it crumpled and wet in a bag overnight.
