What to Wear to a Mehendi

A mehendi is the one wedding function where you can actually have fun with what you wear. The main events have rules: heavy, traditional, often uncomfortable. The mehendi has none of that. It's daytime, it's casual, it's usually outdoors or in a tent, and you'll be sitting on the floor getting henna on your hands. Dress accordingly.

The colour

Bright is expected. Yellow, green, pink, orange — the whole marigold palette. But if bright isn't your thing, you can do interesting instead: the Chartreuse Linen Piped Set in yellow-green with brown piping, or the Plum Linen Co-ord Set in deep plum that reads as rich rather than bright.

The silhouette

You'll be sitting cross-legged for an hour while the mehendi artist works. You'll be getting up to eat. You'll be dancing, possibly. This is not the time for a tight dress or a structured blouse. The Cocoa Linen Swing Dress has the right shape: loose enough to move, modest enough to sit on the floor, A-line so it doesn't ride up.

The co-ord option

A co-ord set is the safest bet. Pants mean you don't have to worry about how you're sitting. A matching top means you look coordinated without looking stiff. The Plum Linen Frog Button Set adds a traditional detail with the frog buttons, which satisfies the aunties who expect "ethnic wear" without requiring a full lehenga.

What to avoid

White (it's still a wedding, technically). Black (someone will comment). Anything dry-clean-only (henna stains are forever). Long sleeves that interfere with the mehendi. Heavy jewellery that catches on everything. And uncomfortable shoes — you'll take them off anyway.

The practical notes

Bring a clutch, not a shoulder bag — you'll be moving your arms carefully post-mehendi. Wear easy earrings you can take off yourself. And expect to be photographed: this is the one function where candid photos actually look good, so wear something you're happy to see on Instagram.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wear Western clothes to a mehendi?
Yes, especially if they're in traditional colours or have Indian details. A co-ord set is Western in construction but reads as appropriate.

Is a kurti required?
No. The mehendi is the most flexible function. Wear what you can move in.
