What to Wear to an Interview When It's Hot

Interview advice is written for climates where a blazer is reasonable. Here, you walk from an auto to a lobby in 36 degrees, wait twenty minutes, then sit across from someone while trying not to look like you ran there. The outfit's first job isn't to impress. It's to arrive intact.

What an interview outfit has to do

Look deliberate. Keep you cool on the way in. Not need adjusting once you're seated. And say nothing loud — the conversation should be about you, not the top. That rules out most of what's sold as "formal wear for women", which is polyester and will be damp by the time you reach reception.

Can you wear linen to an interview?

Yes — the right linen. A structured piece in a solid, muted colour reads as polished as cotton poplin and performs far better in heat. Look for a collar or a defined neckline, some shaping through the body, and a colour on the darker or quieter side. Avoid very relaxed cuts. In an interview, "effortless" can look like no effort.

Three tops that work

The Storm Linen Pintuck Top is the strongest option. Storm blue, mandarin collar, finely pintucked front panel, half placket with small wooden buttons, gently shaped through the body. Blue is the safest interview colour there is, and the pintucks add crispness without fuss. It's sleeveless, so carry a light layer for the air-conditioning inside.

The Oat Linen Tie-Neck Top is the most tailored piece in the line — fitted, bust darts, small mandarin collar with a slim neck-tie, short cap sleeves. Tucked into dark trousers it's as close to a formal blouse as linen gets, and the cap sleeve covers the shoulder if the office is conservative.

The Indigo Pintuck Linen Top is the simplest: deep indigo, sleeveless, V-neck, fine vertical pintucks down each side of the front. Dark, plain, sharp.

The bottom half

Straight or wide-leg trousers in black, navy, charcoal or cream. Not jeans, unless you know the company well. Closed-toe flats, loafers or a low block heel. A structured bag that holds a folder without folding it.

Managing the creases

This is the real concern with linen, and it's manageable. Iron the top slightly damp that morning. Hang it for ten minutes before wearing so the fibres set. On the way, sit upright and keep the seatbelt off the front if you can. Soft creases that form during the commute read as fabric. Hard fold lines from a drawer read as careless. The first kind is fine.

Getting there in one piece

Leave fifteen minutes earlier than you need to, so you can stand in the lobby air-conditioning for five minutes before announcing yourself. Carry tissues and a small water bottle. Put the layer on inside, not outside. None of this is about clothes. All of it matters more than the clothes.

For creative and startup interviews

The rules loosen. A co-ord in a deep solid works well — the Plum Linen Co-ord Set is mandarin-collared and fully covered, and a matched set signals that you made a decision. Still skip anything sheer, cropped above the waistband, or loudly patterned.

Frequently asked questions

Is sleeveless acceptable for an interview?
In most urban Indian offices, yes, if the armhole is neat and the neckline is modest. When unsure, wear a light open shirt or jacket over it and decide once you've seen the room.

What colour should I wear to an interview?
Blue, grey, deep neutrals. They read calm and competent. Save the citron for after you get the job.
